Frictional Games, makers of the Penumbra series, have recently blogged that their new game “Amnesia: The Dark Descent” has reached the alpha stage of development for all platforms and is expected to be released in a couple of months. Check out their website for a couple of screenshots. The game looks extremely dark to me but from what I can tell it does look like a very interesting game.

Shadow Shoppe is a unique game/research project:
With the intention to collect data on how people associated character traits with body shapes, Shadow Shoppe is a casual memory game set in a small town that has lost their shadows. The player takes on the role of a temporary apprentice to the shadowmaker and has to help create and return the shadows to the townspeople. Shadows are created by assigning a trait (or traits) to a projected silhouette; shadows are returned by selecting the right shadow based on the given request.
Linux is listed as a supported platform but it does require Adobe Flash to play.

Multiplatform Space MMO Vendetta Online has recently released a new Station Conquest feature into their evolving game. This new gameplay mechanic allows groups of players to coordinate their attacks on a particular station, seizing control of it through the disabling of defense turrets, and taking direct ownership via a new “key” based hierarchical authentication system. Owner keys may then be distributed to other leaders, while various User keys may be generated and given to those needing only more limited types of access. The entire conquest system will be expanded over the coming months to allow surrounding territory to be held for the benefit of the station, while automated drones may be manufactured to mine ores and minerals within the conquered regions and provide for the finances and defense of a given station. In this way, large groups of players may conflict with one another over territorial gains and losses, while also running amok of established NPC factions and the Dynamic Hive.

A post on the Zero Ballistics forums has been posted asking how interested people would be in a free release of Zero Ballistics and what I believe is them stating they will release the game for free also. For people who do not know Zero Ballistics is a game that is a blend of first person shooter and tank combat, focusing on multiplayer gaming exclusively. You can check out the beta if you want to get a better feel for the game.

A bit of bad news on the Linux gaming front as the attempts to get VVVVVVV ported to Linux have failed. According to this blog post is having issues with both graphic and keyboard input with the game even though he made a flash projector for the Linux version. A bit odd as you would consider Flash to be one of more usable cross-platform solutions being a web technology.

The author of BOH, a retro-inspired action game, let us know about the following:
Campobasso, Italy – December 30, 2009
To celebrate the end of the year that has seen the birth of BOH, the collection of expansions grows with a brand-new, claustrophobically oppressive theme: “underground”.
The theme can be downloaded for free from the DOWNLOADS page of the official website.

This is also a good occasion to present the Instant Reward Initiative: graphic artists have the chance to get a free copy of BOH! For details and to take part to the initiative, please surf to the official thread on Mod DB.
